The 18th century BCE Akkadian Atra-Hasis epic, named after its human hero, contains both a creation myth and a flood account, and is one of three surviving Babylonian flood stories. The oldest known copy of the epic of Atrahasis can be dated by colophon (scribal identification) to the reign of Hammurabi's great-grandson, Ammi-Saduqa (1646--1626 BCE), but various Old Babylonian fragments exist; it continued to be copied into the first millennium. The Atrahasis story also exists in a later fragmentary Assyrian version, the first one having been rediscovered in the library of Ashurbanipal, but because of the fragmentary condition of the tablets and ambiguous words, translations had been uncertain. WG Lambert and AR Millard, Cuneiform Texts from Babylonian Tablets in the British Museum, London (1965) published many additional texts belonging to the epic, including an Old Babylonian copy (written around 1650 BCE) which is our most complete surviving recension of the tale. These new texts greatly increased knowledge of the epic and they served as the foundation for the first English translation of the Atrahasis epic in something approaching entirety, by Lambert and Millard (Atrahasis: The Babylonian Story of the Flood, Oxford, 1969). A further fragment has been recovered in Ugarit. The surviving Atrahasis epic is written on three tablets in Akkadian, the language of ancient Babylon.

interesting story.
Why is this"human mythological thinking"and Genesis not eloylad? Was this not wrote first??Are some of the story's in Genesis not renditions from the ancient tablets? Why do the tablets have detailed information about our solar system and Genesis does not?Pluto wasn't discovered until 1930s ,that's what I got told in history class. Is anybody with me on this?
All of this is only human mythological thinking Genesis says that God is just , and that earth was filled with violence, because of the Nephilim Genesis chapter 6, these were the sons of the fallen angels, God also saved Noah and his family because they were just men and women to the eyes of Jehovah. Satan wants to take us away from God. The book of Job says that Satan is causing us trouble and injustice, of course not everything is to blame on Satan's account, man has his share too.

The Mesopotamians & Genesis agree: Man is a sinner. They differ as to "Why"? The Gods are immoral sinners: they murder fellow gods, commit incest, lie, & steal: man made in their image must be an immoral sinner too! Genesis refutes all this: God is not a sinner, he is just, man is to blame, not God, for all the evil in the world. Genesis _shifts_ blame_ from God to Man, an _inversion_ of Mesopotamian beliefs! Man is destroyed by a flood because of his noise imposed on him at his creation by Mami. The noise is the complaining of the Igigi gods who protested night & day for 40 yrs their grievous toil in Enlil's garden of edin at Nippur. Unable to sleep Enlil sends the flood to destroy man and get some silence and thus rest by day and sleep by night. Man was innocent, Enlil was unjust. This is a critique of unjust gods. Genesis denies all this, God is just, man is a murderer & deserves death.
